#CareerCrushing with Lola Berry – Nutritionist

Lola Berry began her career as a DJ, spending her spare time devouring lamingtons and giant Carmelo Koalas, but it was a crush on a boy which led her to a life inspiring others to nourish their bodies with good food.

“I fell for a boy and wanted to feel more confident, and started to take care of what I nourished my body with,” Lola, 30 said, “I started to realise how awesome you could feel when you nourished your body with real food.”

It was that feeling which inspired Lola to study a Bachelor of Health Science majoring in Nutritional Medicine at Endeavour College of Natural Health in Melbourne.

“I literally woke up one morning and wanted to become the Steve Irwin of fruits and veggies.”

While studying, Lola worked three jobs in order to save the money she needed to purchase a video camera which helped make that dream a reality through her YouTube channel; Fruits and Roots.

“I got 3 jobs and saved up to buy a video camera whist studying a bachelor of health science, then on weekends I would film at Farmer’s Markets and fruit plantations.”

It was a chance encounter on morning television that gave the Lola Berry brand national exposure.

“[Morning Television] began with a cold call to a network who was going to do a one-off segment about a girl using the internet to spread a health message.”

“Then when they called cut, they signed me to that show… That’s where things begun!”

Lola has since written numerous cookbooks sharing her love for nourishing food, and spreading the message that food really is medicine, and landing speaking gigs at events alongside other foodies including Luke Hines.

As the Lola Berry brand grows, Lola has learnt that she is now living a life somewhat in the spotlight, and with that status comes criticism – especially in the world of social media.

“At the end of the day, everyone is going to judge you and you don’t get to control that,” Lola said, “so now I just try to do my best, live from my heart and be real, and that’s what I can control.”

This year, Lola opened Happy Place in South Melbourne, a café that offers healthy on-the-go meals, snacks, smoothies and juices that’s about “empowering you to find the happy place within yourself.”

“There’s loads of hard times, heaps of mess ups and a truckloads of failures, and I think they will continue to come. But you know what? That’s what makes the highlights even better.”

Lola encourages students wanting a similar pathway to be themselves and be real.

“I think if you love what you do then you just find a way.”

When you were 10, what did you want to be when you grew up?

The girl version of “Mr. Bean” because I wanted to make people laugh.

If you had one day to try any job in the world, what would it be?

I’d want to work with Steve Irwin for a day. He’s awesome.
